"This Too Shall Pass"

When breastfeeding seems overwhelming, painful or just too much. When you are exhausted, sleep deprived and emotionally fragile, remember that this time in your life will not last forever. You and your baby will grow and learn together, breastfeeding will get better. Take one day at a time, one feeding at a time. Stay positive as much as you can, persevere and believe that you WILL be able to breastfeed. It will get easier. This too shall pass

Having a baby is completely overwhelming. With the sleepless nights, post partum blues, worries about feeding baby, family and perhaps financial pressures, as well as the everyday stresses of your regular life, it is easy to feel close to breaking down.

One thing that helps me survive the rough times is knowing that "this too shall pass". Time is always passing, nothing stays the same forever. Babies and children grow and change, become teenagers and eventually adults and the challenges you face as a parent will change with them.

Knowing that you are doing your best and that things will change, can often help you through those rough times. Meeting other mothers is a tremendous help too, in learning that others have "survived" and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Below are some examples of challenges faced by parents with the reminder that "this too shall pass".
  • When baby is awake in the middle of the night - again.  You are tearful, exhausted, overwhelmed and ready to give up ...  remember "this too shall pass"
  • When your nipples are sore, baby is not latching well, your breasts are engorged, hot and tight ... remegreen paintmber "this too shall pass".
  • When your neighbour tells you how wonderful her baby was, how she slept through the night at 4 weeks old and was "just perfect".  Your baby seems to cry "all the time" ... remember "this too shall pass".
  • When you are late for an appointment because baby needed to nurse, you haven't had time to get a shower and the house is a mess and you have friends wanting to come over for dinner ... remember "this too shall pass"
  • When your mother-in-law drops in for a visit and baby is a perfect little angel for her but not for you ... remember "this too shall pass"
  • When your two year old learns the word "No" ... remember "this too shall pass"
  • When your three year old finds the baby powder in the bathroom and proceeds to create a snow storm  ...remember "this too shall pass"
  • When your four year old uses the finger paints to paint all over her body while you dashed to the bathroom ... remember "this too shall pass"
  • When baby falls asleep in their dinner ... remember "this too shall pass".
  • When your nine year old comes home with a pile of homework and refuses to do it ... remember "this too shall pass".
  • When your thirteen year old tells you "I hate you" because you will not let her get a tattoo when "everyone else has one" ...  remember "this too shall pass".
  • When your seventeen year old is out after her curfew and comes home drunk ... remember "this too shall pass"
As a parent, the challenges you face might seem endless and insurmountable. Become knowledgeable, make friends you can share with. Laugh and spend time with your family. Before you know it "this too will have passed!"
