 About Gwyn Treharne

Gwyn and her girls

A breastfeeding mother of 2 girls, I became passionate about breastfeeding through the relationship with my girls. Attending a La Leche League meeting when pregnant with Sara (my eldest), I quickly learned about, not only the nutritional benefits to children but also about the depth of emotional bonding between mothers and their breastfed children. There really is nothing quite like it!

Having children has been the biggest challenge of my life. I quickly realized this as soon as they were born! Exhaustion, hormones and anxiety abounded in those early days. I had no instruction manual for this little being that I was completely in love with and responsible for. "Why is she still crying?","what am I doing wrong?" were questions always crossing my mind, eroding my confidence. As time passed, breastfeeding became easier, I learnt about my child's personality - what worked and what didn't work. I met other new moms, learned from them and together we got through the rough times.

In my work as a La Leche League Leader I have become more and more passionate about breastfeeding. I wanted to do more to help breastfeeding moms and babies and as a result I began my journey to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I have attended many breastfeeding conferences, have taken breastfeeding classes and have observed at two very busy breastfeeding clinics in Toronto (including the Newman Breastfeeding Institute)

I trained as a registered nurse between 1986 and 1990 in Liverpool, England. After coming to Canada "for a year, just to see what it's like", I decided to stay. Currently I work with adults and seniors with mental health problems at the local community hospital. I have worked with mothers living with post partum depression and post partum psychosis and understand the healing ability of breastfeeding during these extremely difficult times.

I strongly believe that my work in mental health and in breastfeeding support, complement each other in a unique way. Factual, evidence based knowledge on breastfeeding, plus my counseling skills (not to mention my personal parenting experience) allow me to offer breastfeeding mothers support, information and most importantly an understanding of how becoming a mother changes your life.
